Between the Visible and the Unseen
At The Armory Show 2026, Spinello Projects, the Miami-based gallery representing Cuban-born twin brothers Elliot & Erick Jiménez, presented What We Are Becoming. Working across photography and mixed media, the young artists draw from Afro-Cuban spirituality, Caribbean history and the cultural hybridity that has shaped their experience.
Found objects and historical references enter their compositions alongside carefully constructed photographic worlds, creating images that feel at once contemporary and timeless. Their figures often emerge from deep darkness, their faces partially dissolving into shadow. In works such as The Cord Between Us, color and contrast seem to erase the boundaries between foreground and background, giving the photograph an almost dreamlike physicality.
What makes their work compelling is its ability to hold several histories at once: ancestry and contemporary life, ritual and image, the personal and the universal. Among the many encounters of this year’s fair, theirs was one that remained with us — quietly, but unmistakably.
